Murcia Regional Airport Finally Opens
King Felipe VI of Spain was welcomed at the opening of Murcia’s New Regional Airport in Corvera on Tuesday 15th January.
The airport has been a source of much discussion and controversy as the building was completed and ready for opening in 2012 but disputes with Unions lead to a delay of six and a half years.
The first flights from Easyjet and Ryanair touched down safely on the new runway.
The airport is being used by the major operators Easyjet, Ryanair and later in the year Jet2 with start their service. For the moment the operators are running the same routes as the standard winter timetable into Murcia San Javier Airport. Hopefully following new routes will be added later in the year.
San Javier Airport is now closed to passengers and has reverted to a military airport for the Spanish Airforce. Residents of Los Alcazares have been delighted by the air displays from the Eagle Patrol (Patrulla Agila) as they have taken to the skies to reclaim their airspace and practice their aeronautical manoeuvres.
